Curls Happen

If you own a cowhide rug, you know first-hand they will curl on the corners. But there are things you can do to prepare and help avoid the curling.

The edges of a cowhide rug curl because the leather fibers that line the outside of the rug dry out faster than those at the thickest point inside the cowhide. Curling doesn’t mean you have purchased or own a poor quality cowhide rug; environmental influences can curl them all.

The best way to prevent your rug from curling is to keep it out of direct sunlight or intense heat.

Also, be careful when vacuuming over your cowhide – at times the vacuum can cause some fraying and curling of your rug.

If the curling of the rug is bothersome, simply fold over the inflicted portion of the rug and lightly spray water on its back end. Then, slowly massage water into the rug, and then you should fold it back over and apply pressure for a short amount of time. If this doesn’t work, begin trimming little portions of leather from the curling area and you should be set.

Curling just happens - so learning what to do about it is just part of being a cowhide owner.

How To Patch Your Cowhide Rug

Hides are tough, no doubt about that. In their natural setting, on the back of an animal, that is - they are naturally durable; meant to last a lifetime. What they aren't meant for, are shoes on the feet of human pedestrians walking atop them day in and out. Over time, it's very possible that a small hole, or tear - or very thin spot might start to show on your natural cowhide rug. And this doesn't just go for cowhide rugs, it's also true for nearly any type of animal skin/natural hide rug including bear skin, zebra rugs, etc.

Or, perhaps something was spilled on your cowhide rug, or even burned or accidentally torn or cut. Whatever the situation - rest assured that your natural hide can be repaired.

Easy Repair Process

1/ Get your patch. Most natural hides follow the natural shape of the animal, and have similar coloration, naturally, throughout. This means, you can easily pull your patch material right from the same rug. Find an edge where you can spare a few centimeters of similarly colored hide as the area you want to repair. You will have to use a utility knife to get through the backing. If this is impossible, or you simply don't want to cut from the perimeter of the rug, another option is to just buy a sample piece of hide in the same style or color. (Rawhide Company provides good sized cowhide samples for only $24.95!)

2/Prepare your hide & patch. Place a work board behind the area of the rug you are working to repair. Being careful not to take too much, cut a small square around the damaged spot. Do not cut through the backing of the hide. Then, use this square to match your patch as best as you can to ensure that the colors and patterns are the best match possible and that your patch is sized appropriately. The hairs should be laying in the same direction on the patch, as they were in your damaged area.

3/Place backing on the patch. You can use carpet backing, or even thickset felt. Place your new patch on this backing using heavy-duty fabric glue (follow the directions for amount and drying time) and leave a one-inch perimeter of backing to the patch.

4/Place the patch. With the patch now ready, and facing upwards, you will see the one-inch perimeter around the hide area. On that area, you will apply more fabric glue and then gently slide the patch in the square area on the hide. Press firmly along the outside of the repaired area to seal the glue between the patch and the damaged area.

It might be smart to place a weighted object on top for several hours to ensure a good bond. And, depending on how much traffic your hide rug sees, you might also want to stitch the backing to the patch backing for added closure.

A improperly chosen rug can throw off the entire proportion of a room. How can you select the perfect size rug to fit your interior-design?

First, you should make sure the space accomodates your furniture. Then scope out the remaining space.The best plan is to select a larger rug for ALL seated guests to have their feet on, as well as the coffee table - OR have a smaller rug and arrange your furniture around the paramteter.

If you want carpet, get carpet. But for rugs, don’t go wall to wall.An area rug, such as a lovely Brazilian cowhide rug, or a laser-cut natural hide area rug - should have some space around it as an accent to the floors. A basic rule of thumb is 18' of space around a rug. Smaller amounds of space, in proportion around the rug in smaller interior spaces is acceptable.

For really high-traffic aread, make sure there's ample rug coverage. If there's not - don't do a rug at all. Hallways and heavily-used areas can be dangerous if the rug is not filling up the space, and can look pieced together or awkward.

In the bedrooms, either opt for a small rug in the space where the bed ISN'T, (such as in front of a bed, or in a small sitting area of a master) or select a large area rug that goes beyond the paremeter of the bed by a foot or more, will look best.

In an odd-shaped room, consider an odd-shaped rug; such as a genuine cowhide rug. And in rectangular rooms, an organically shaped cow hide would look great, because it's a cool way of setting areas apart in this 'long' space.

For dining areas, you should be able to fit your entire dining room table and all it's chairs on the interior of the rug. In fact, the rug should be big enough in this space, that the chairs can be pulled out, and rearranged easily without leaving the space of the rug. Anything smaller will leave the room feeling awkward.

Whatever your situation, selecitng the perfect rug is easy - and if it doesn't feel right, you can always change it. Rugs are perfect to compliment to your design because they are a durable, colorful and cost efficient accessory.

Normally, one doesn't assume much difference between a rug and a carpet. But they are different. And when it comes to accenting your space, adding color and texture to your design - a RUG is where it's at. More specifically - a natural hair-on cow hide rug - is where it's at.

The term ‘carpet’ is derived from the Medieval Italian word Carpita. Carpire, a derivative of this word, means (literally) "to pluck". Often defined as ‘a piece of thick, nappy fabric, commonly made of wool, used for various purposes, as for covering and ornamenting part of a bare floor, for hanging in a doorway as a portiere, for protecting a portion of carpet, for a wrap to protect the legs from cold'...carpet seems pretty useful. It's got a big job, by definition. Unlike the 'carpet' term, ‘rug’ literally means ‘a torn-off portion’ and are often use as accessories and decor, rather than as a functioning piece of the space.

The words “carpet” and “rug” are normally interchangeable in everyday use. The big difference amongst a rug and a carpet, though, is size. Carpets are floor coverings stretched wall-to-wall and cover the entire floor, whereas rugs can be used to highlight the floor, accessorize the decor, or they can be hung on the walls. Area rugs are most popular these days, for a number of reasons - including the fact that as time has gone on, carpets have become more outmoded, whereas rugs are easier to place and use within any home. And - economically - they make more sense because you can take your rugs with you wherever you go - and add color and design elements to your home at the same time.

A rug can also come in many different variations of size and shape, whereas a carpet tends to be only large and square, and because rugs can come in so many different sizes and shapes, the appeal factor is obvious. Origin of The Rug

In today’s society, when you buy a rug, it is understood that the rug is to go on your floor, to cover up an area of the room, in order to make either your room feel warmer or cooler, or just to make a certain color “pop.”

However, originally rugs were made to protect the body from cold, to be spread before a seat of honor, to cover a table, couch, or wall, or to form the curtains of a tent. Rugs have always been an accessory, but not always in the way that we think of it being used.

The certainty of the origin of the rug is a mystery to say the least, but we do know that the floor coverings used by the early man were made using the skin of the animals, grass, and reed, with the crude skin of animals and mats used to serve as insulators in very cool temperatures. What animals you ask? Well, there is evidence of goats and sheep’s being sheared at 6000 B.C., and it’s certain that if a cow or bull were to come by, it would have been used too, but not only for its meat, but for its usefulness as a durable cowhide rug too.

Although the exact origin of the rug is a mystery, the discovery of the Pazyryk Rug had a magnificent impact on the rugs history. This rug was revealed in a Scythian interment heap dating from the 5th century B.C., and has characteristics of a modern Persian or Anatolian rug with Turkish knots, but because the rug did seem so well finished, it was assumed implicit knowledge that the root of the rug must have come earlier than in this point in history.

The rug, as of right now, does not have an exact origin, but does seem to have always had a specific purpose; interior or exterior design. While the rug has not always been specifically for the floor, it has always been used in various ways to express feeling, show culture, and denote warmth. The rug, also, seems to have originally been made out of animal hides, meaning that even though we are a modern company, we are keeping the tradition of the cowhide rug alive.

Unknown to most people, what we think of as cow isn’t always a cow at all. In fact, an intact (i.e., not castrated) adult male is called a bull. A young female before she has had a calf of her own and is under three years of age is called a heifer, while a young female that has had only one calf is occasionally called a first-calf heifer, and then a castrated male is called a steer in the United States.

Cattle raised for human consumption are called beef cattle, and Cattle of certain breeds bred specifically for milk production are called milking or dairy cattle, while a cow kept to provide milk for one family may be called a house cow or milker.

So what, exactly, is a cow? A cow is an adult female that has had a calf (or two) and she is normally domesticated as well.

To describe these different types of cattle, the word normally used is bovine. All of these bovine creatures have multiple uses, but there’s one more that wasn’t mentioned. After the cow – or other type of bovine mammal – is used to its fullest, by creating the different meats and such that we eat and use today, the last part is to be used that and hopefully not wasted is the skin or the cowhide. And although this may sound somewhat alarming, in all reality, the cow was to be slaughtered anyway for its meat, so instead of looking at this in an unfavorable light, consider the fact that really what we are doing is being as efficient as possible.

Natural Cowhide Rugs are becoming a very popular accessory in American home decor, being reminiscent of our western heritage in America. Holstein cowhides have a large percentage of their surface covered by two boldly contrasting colors in a large pattern and usually come in white and brown or white and black, but these hides can also have gradation from brown to black in their markings. Holsteins are very intrinsic to the traditional southwestern decor. Brown and white cloud pattern cowhides are also available. The salt and pepper pattern is also very popular, and that is usually a background of white with a spattering of black. Cleaning and Deodorizing Cowhide Rug

Imagine this…you are relaxing by the fireplace with a book and a nice glass of red wine. Uh-oh, your glass spills on….your new COWHIDE RUG! What are you going to do? You’re NOT going to worry! Genuine cowhide rugs (like the ones from Rawhide Company) are very simple and easy to maintain and keep clean.

For wine stains (and most others) on your cowhide rug, just soak up spills with a damp (but not wet) sponge or cloth using mild soapy solution. You can wipe and rub the hair vigorously in any direction. Finally, clean with a damp cloth using a diluted 5% white vinegar and 95% water solution.

There are several things you can do to protect against stains - one is purchase some suede waterproofing spray, but confirm first that it won't discolor your natural hide coloration. This will help protect your cowhide rug against stains, before they occur. For simpler stains or spills, just a damp cloth will usually do the trick.

But, don’t forget, your cowhide rug CAN NOT be put in the washer or dry cleaned!

If you fold your cowhide rug - this is fine; as it's a durable natural skin/hide. However, to get the creases out, you should simply let the cowhide lay flat for a few days - and the creases should resolve. If you need to, place a few weights (like books, or heavy, flat items) on the creases to help them flatten out.

It's also safe to vacuum your cowhide; or take it outside and shake it off. It’s there's an odor associated with your rug - has a sweaty or clammy smell - it most likely needs to be deodorized. The first thing that you can do to deodorize your rug is simply to hang it outdoors. Let the fresh air takeover your rug and the smell should be very fresh when you bring it back in your house. If the natural way doesn’t take care of that smell, simply use a powdered carpet deodorizer. These are great for carpets or rugs, and are guaranteed to get rid of odd odors.

While they are a super-durable and very stylish rug, genuine cowhide hair-on-hides need to be cared for the same way you would any other home accessory. Inside The Hide

When you look at a finished hide, whether in the natural or dyed to match a décor, the broad scope of processing it isn’t readily apparent. Sometimes, you may look at a piece of cowhide and think its one thing, when it’s really something else—the grain definition has been embossed into the leather. How is this done?

The original grain is removed and an artificial grain is pressed onto the surface. And several terms may mean the same thing. For example, when the genuine grain remains on the hide, the leather is called full grain or full top grain.

The better the quality of the hide, the less treatment it requires. Calfskins are finer than the hides of older animals—sort of like the difference between babies and their grandparents without the wrinkles. Actually, in a premium quality hide, you should see the “fat wrinkles”, the natural markings, and the hide ought to be supple to the touch. Those wrinkles create the unique beauty of each mature leather piece. Although calf skins are finer hides, they’re equal in durability and abrasion resistance to their elders. Why? Because the fiber structure of calfskin is by nature denser, tighter, and stronger than the mature hides.

Processing hides and skin into finished leather has three phases: pre-tanning, tanning, and finishing. (More on the processes of hide tanning later.) There is a fine distinction between each phase. Anything done to the hide after tanning becomes part of the finishing phase. This can include a wide variety of processes: dying, rolling, pressing, snuffing, embossing, glazing, water-proofing, stain-proofing, flame-proofing, as examples. Wow, seems like a lot of terms. Some are self-explanatory, like water-, stain-, and flame-proofing. Others you can figure out from everyday applications, like dying. However, some aren’t obvious and entail special equipment.

For example, glazing. This is a finish where the leather is put under tremendous pressure and the surface is polished to a high luster through the actions of glass on steel rollers. (Don’t get your fingers caught in that one.)

The final purpose of a cowhide determines how it’s finished. More than that, it dictates how it’s handled during the pre-tanning and what kind of tanning process works best for the end product. We survived Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Phew. My fingers are tired from all that shopping, but I’m not quite finished. Attitude and Gratitude—Leather and Lace

Thanksgiving is days away. We have a great deal for which to be thankful and ought to have an attitude of gratitude. What does all of this have to do with cowhide rugs, you ask - ? Everything! The Pilgrims and Indians alike were very grateful for LEATHER - and we are too.

The holiday goes back several centuries, to 1621. In early autumn, the 53 surviving Pilgrims of the Mayflower celebrated their successful harvest, as was the English custom. During this time, according to Edward Winslow’s writing Mourt's Relation , about ninety Indians came by with their great king Massasoit. The Wampanoag had lived in southeastern New England for thousands of years. They were farmers, fishermen, and hunters in a seasonal cycle. They hunted with the Pilgrims and their contribution to the Thanksgiving meal was venison. This meant there were animal skins to be cured and tanned, which probably became part of the gift to the hosting Pilgrims.

Massasoit was the most powerful leader, (also know as sachem) of the several tribes of the Wampanoag nation. His headquarters, located forty miles southwest of Plymouth, MA, was in Rhode Island. At the time of the first Thanksgiving, Massasoit was in his middle years and securely established as a strong, dignified and subtle leader. Because his people had been devastated by disease and were vulnerable to the powerful Narragansett tribes, Massasoit's mission among the Pilgrims was to forge an alliance. And not just with the Europeans, but with other Native groups. He intended to ensure his people's survival. His relationship with the Pilgrims, part of his active diplomacy, was strengthened when Edward Winslow saved his life in 1623.

Under their covenant, the two cultures shared expertise and food, farming and fertilizing methods. (Yep, it was the Indian who taught the Pilgrim to bury fish in the furrows so the plants had the proper nutrients to grow strong and produce a good crop.)

Both cultures wore leather shoes: the Indians were soft and pliable with durable soles; the Pilgrims hard and heavy soled. The Pilgrim bound his books and papers in leather; the Indian relied on oral histories. Both used hides for protection against the elements in clothing and shelter. They just used them in different ways. Leather, like true friendship, was prized because it was durable.

Early American Leather

There is hardly a picture of historic America that shows the people where you can’t count the number of ways they depended on leather in their daily lives. For the first couple centuries of settlement and frontier expansion in America, leather was a staple much like flour and tea or coffee. They were not unique.

The Indians used treated cowhides and other animal hides for shelter, clothing, shoes, and tool-making. Tribes used different methods to prepare the leather, so there were as many degrees of fine leather as there were large villages. Their skills in making soft, pliable, water-shedding buckskin has never been equaled. Most foreign traders sought the fine leather goods the Indians offered.

Leather and Natural Hides Through The Middle Ages

In the eighth century, Spain, under Moorish domination, perfected a way to tan horse hides in a process we now call Cordovan leather. Actually, Cordovan is a misuse of the original Cordoba, the city in Spain where the process was initiated. Cordovan is also a color used for describing a reddish-black finish. The leather crafts and finishing processes continued to flourish and evolve through the history.

Approximately four centuries later, Marco Polo (1254-1324) knew how to walk in shoe leather and how to sit in a leather saddle. For 24 years he traveled the Silk Road through Asia, beyond Mongolia, the whole of China, and even visited part of Siberia. Polo became a close friend and confidant of Kublai Khan (1214-1294) and documented his travels in Il Milione. He observed that the world of leather stretched as far as did civilization. The Mongols made flasks, blankets, masks, and caps using the same tanning methods employed until this past century.

In the fourteenth century, Europeans began combining leather with wood. They made chairs, sedans, and benches in what can only be described as an art form. Soon, leather was used as upholstery. Leather crafting moved to high art in the construction of jewel cases and boxes. These highly prized home decor items and home accessories have transcended cultures and time.

Today, we have more options, fabrics, and materials than at any time in history. We also use leather and natural cowhides for more purposes than ever. What’s the largest use of rawhide? My immediate response was, “To make cowhide rugs and wall decorations.” To confirm my answer, I did a search on the Internet and discovered (horrors upon horrors) I was wrong. Worse, I had to agree with the answer I found. What is it? To protect the cow from the elements, and also to keep it's internal organs from falling out. (Bet the ten-year-olds love it.)

Even so, I began wondering about how far back the use of cowhides went. The answer to that one was easier — back to the eviction of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. But I don’t think those were cowhides.

It turns out that civilizations have used leather since their beginnings. Fresh rawhide needs some cleaning and refining. Ancient civilizations let nothing go to waste. They domesticated and raised cattle herds. When the need arose or at designated times according to their cultures, they harvested a cow or two. Sinew became thread. Bones became tools and implements. Hides became clothing, shoes, blankets, tents, water sacks, packing bags and drum covers. And it wasn’t just cowhide. They supplemented with the skins from all the animals they hunted.

Back in 5,000 to 3,000 BC, the Sumerians in Mesopotamia used the leather they made to craft long dresses and diadems for women. The Assyrians preferred leather for footwear and wineskins; they inflated it for use as raft floats. Ancient India innovators processed the leaver in a style known as Morocco. The Egyptians became real leather artisans and crafted tools, weapons, and simple ornaments.

Next were the Phoenicians and the Romans with their ornately garbed generals in leather breastplates. Each civilization built on the use and skill base of the previous.

Early on, there were problems. One was the way the skins became stiff at low temperatures and rotted in the heat. They solved these through trial and error in what turns out to be one of the oldest crafts known to man—the process known as tanning.

The first rudimentary tanning process is documented in Homer’s Illiad and various other Assyrian writing. This too improved with time. When modern archaeologists excavated the ruins of Pompeii, they discovered a tannery with all the preserved.

Notice that each civilization found a way to use finished cowhide for numerous uses, and often in decoration—whether they did it themselves or used as a cowhide rug or wall hanging.

Rawhide Memories and Rowdy Yates

In the thrilling days of yesteryear when most television programs were filmed in black and white and Clint Eastwood was actually a kid, he co-starred as Rowdy Yates in a horse opera called Rawhide. Eric Fleming played the trail boss, Gil Favor, for the 217 programs. The stories were usually about people they met along the trail from San Antonio, TX to Sedalia, MO. Because this was a cattle drive, there were lots of cows—three thousand of them. (that's a whole lot of cowhide rugs, too)

The cattle were the underlying reason for Gil and Rowdy to get involved with the people they encountered. The cows were also the main consideration for when they moved, stopped, watered, and rested. They had to be kept fit and healthy. Each of those cows had a personality (sort of like how every cowhide rug is unique as well!) —even though none of them got billing on the marquee.

When I think about the series Rawhide now, I think about rugs, pillows, and décor. Just imagine how many rooms I could decorate with the hides of those three thousand cattle on that imaginary drive. Cowhides, like cows themselves - have a rich and unique history.

Each hide pattern is unique, and no two hides will ever be exactly the same. Some of the more popular cowhide breeds are the Holstein and the Longhorn.

The Holstein breed originated almost 2,000 years ago in the Netherlands. The black cows and white cows of the Batavians and Friesians were bred, and they eventually evolved genetically into the black and white cows known today as the Holstein-Friesian. These are the standard of the 'dairy cow' image, and you see this breed on the Chick-Fil-A commercials and signs.

The Longhorn cattle breed became the bedrock of the American cattle industry in the newly discovered Americas a little over 500 years ago. The first herds were driven northward out of Mexico to a mission near the Sabine River in Texas. The early missions and settlers would not easily survive in this new environment, but the Longhorn did.

Caring For, Cleaning and Keeping Your Genuine Cowhide Rug

Now that you've got a gorgeous new cowhide rug for your home - you need to keep it clean; and care for it the way you would any other home accessory. While they are a super-durable rug (that adds TONS of style to any interior, we might mention) genuine cowhide hair-on-hides need to be cared for.

If you fold your cowhide rug - this is fine; as it's a durable natural skin/hide. However, to get the creases out, you should simply let the cowhide lay flat for a few days - and the creases should resolve. If you need to, place a few weights (like books, or heavy, flat items) on the creases to help them flatten out.

One thing you can do to protect against stains - is visit a shoe repair shop or cobbler - and ask if you can purchase some suede waterproofing spray, and confirm beforehand whether it will effect your hide's natural color scheme. This should be a safe protection for most light colored hides, but either way - confirm that it won't discolor your natural hide coloration. This will help protect your cowhide rug against stains, before they occur.

It's also safe to vacuum your cowhide; or take it outside and shake it off. Sometimes - if there's an odor associated with your rug, you can also let it air outside.

A kitchen is usually a smaller space, many times with a “food” themed décor. With this ongoing pattern of traditional décor, kitchens are becoming extremely out of date, with many of the old-school trends landing on the interior decorators list of "Do Not’s"! Don't be on the wrong list; instead - we offer some "decorator DO'S" for your kitchen!

One great idea to add texture, color and a sense of style to any culinary space - is to utilize a cowhide rug. There was a beautiful cowhide rug featured on the Pioneer Woman's website and again in Southern Living magazine. Located at the ranch in her "LODGE" project - Ree Drummond (Shown left at "the LODGE") used a small rug in her open design. It adds texture, pattern and color to her space and couples nicely with the wood floor and cabinetry, as well as the other 'rustic' and 'western' accents but retains a look that is high-end, elegant and clean.

If your kitchen is large, without an island, a regular cowhide sized rug might be the focal point of your kitchen. If you have an island/bar, a large cowhide rug is probably not your best option because the rug will overwhelm your kitchen. The best rug would be a “small” rug, which is about 3.5X3.5. This size rug would look good in front of your stove or in front of your sink area.

Since kitchens are small areas, sometimes a decorative rug won't work for your design plan. If your kitchen is small, but has a counter - consider a rug under your bar area, or even as a wall hanging.

If a rug won't work at all in your kitchen, and you just need to add some pattern or texture to your kitchen space - why not just put an 'accent' of cowhide in your kitchen? You might use cowhide chairs, or other accents with cowhide.

COWHIDE IDEA! We have samples (small squares) and small hides that are often used in crafts. The samples might be a perfect coaster, or patches put into a frame on the wall or fashioned into a mosaic for the kitchen. These small patches are perfect for that added 'something' that will not take over your kitchen. When using the sample patches you could even line your canisters with the patches. Cowhide canisters can be just the perfect hint of color and pattern in a kitchen.

When hanging a natural cowhide on the wall, you will need a lot of patience and a little bit of time but, your newly decorated room will thank you.

The first step in hanging your hide is gathering your materials. You will need a tall ladder that is able to reach to the ceiling, a hammer, a lot of little thin nails, and another person to help! Remember that hides can be very heavy depending on the size - so hanging them on the wall requires a lot of support.

When you think of the word “cow”, the first thing that probably comes to mind is “black and white.” Why is this? Why do we always associate the word “cow” with the colors black and white? Even though the most common cow is the Holstein cow, which is typically black and white, there are many other breeds of cattle with a wide variety of unique colors.

Now, we know that a Holstein cow stands out very clearly because of its usual bold & beautiful black and white markings, but they can also be found in red and white. The Holstein cow is a breed of dairy cow, and are the world’s highest producing dairy animal which originated in Europe. They can now be seen in almost every pasture you pass by.

Most cowhide rugs are covered mostly with one color and then another contrasting color, they consist of a very bold large pattern.

Much like the Holstein cowhide rugs, the Salt and Pepper cowhide rugs also come in black and white. These kinds of hides can also be called 'speckled' hides because that is what the pattern is closely compared too.
